Life in the Outback
Photograph by David Alan Harvey
Stockman Dave White gazes out over the Stoney's sheep and cattle station in northern Victoria, living the life Banjo Paterson captured in "At the Melting of the Snow:" There's a sunny Southern land, / And it's there that I would be Where the big hills stand / In the South Countrie! "It's a great life," said Dave's boss Chris Stoney. "Very rewarding." But with the pleasure of leading a lifestyle so strongly rooted in Australian history comes a duty. "Living a bit of a myth, you feel a responsibility to upkeep it," explained Stoney. "You tend to chase a bit of publicity to try to stay there, where that's not our nature. I'd rather lead a quiet life and do what we're doing."
