The Fight Against Fat
Photograph by Karen Kasmauski
In Waimanalo, Hawaii, "Uncle Henry" Kahalewai keeps a weight-lifting gym in front of his house where neighborhood kids can work out and stay out of trouble. It's also a stop for health care workers who screen local residents for adult-onset diabetes as part of a five-year community outreach project called Mauli OlaSpirit of Life. Project coordinators have tested about 3,000 residents in this low-income town and diagnosed 150 of them with type 2 diabetes, a partial consequence of adding the "three Cs"cheese, chocolate, and colato the traditional Hawaiian diet. Another 450 locals have been found to be pre-diabetic. One study found that native Hawaiians were two and a half times more likely to have diabetes than white residents of similar age.
