Portion Inflation

The plates are bigger, the servings are bigger, and so are the people: In the U.S., adult obesity rates have doubled since 1971, and one-third of adults are now considered obese. Researchers are assessing how eating away from home contributes to this obesity epidemic. The Big MacBig Gulp mentality may have something to do with it. Between 1977 and 1996 the average U.S. hamburger increased in size by 1.3 ounces and restaurant soft drinks by 6.8 ounces.
