Encircled by her mentoring group, an ICS student holds an eagle feather, symbol that it's her turn to speak. Mentoring is fundamental to the school's nurturing ideals—allowing kids to meet with someone daily to discuss problems, concerns, or thoughts. "It's a time to connect with the children," says group leader Paula Fernandez, second from left, "so they all have somebody on campus involved in their life on a deeper level...a lot like family."
