Rekindling Traditions
Photograph by Penny De Los Santos
At a monthly ICS sweat lodge, men enter the fabric-covered structure to participate in a cleansing ritual. Heated by fire-cooked rocks, the lodge represents the womb of Mother Earth: Sitting in its warmth is akin to being reborn. The yellow flag on the staff represents the Eastern Spirits. "We call upon the Eastern Spirits when there is a change in life," says Waubano, the school's spiritual adviser. On this night, a man got a new Indian name.
