Summer Harvest
Photograph by Norbert Rosing

It's a good year when a fox with a mouth full of lemmings trots home to a den with hungry pups near Hudson Bay. One of the arctic foxes' most vital food sources, lemmings follow a natural boom-and-bust cycle, super-abundant about every four years then almost disappearing for a year. In poor lemming years arctic foxes have little to rely on except birds in summer and carcasses of seals killed by polar bears in winter.
