Guarding the Land

Mike Mowray, a firefighter based at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Elko office, poses with a tool of his trade. Mowray and his colleagues are responsible for fire suppression on 7.5 million acres (3 million hectares) of federal land. Recent years have had an average of 300 wildfires, burning a million acres (400,000 hectares) a year from 1999 to 2001.
