Hundreds Dead

A pall of dark smoke rises above the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, after an August 7, 1998, bombing believed to have been planned by al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. Nearly 300 people were killed, the vast majority of them Kenyans. A simultaneous bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania killed at least ten Africans and injured dozens more. U.S. President Bill Clinton responded by launching cruise missiles at targets in Sudan and at al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan but missed bin Laden.
