Tender Farewell
Photograph by Randy Olson
A gentle touch eases the pain of grief at a mortuary ceremony on the Tiwi Islands. Held during the dry season, these ceremonies mark the death of family members. Here Francesca Puruntatameri connects with her young granddaughter while her husband, Marcus, applies traditional body paint. The paint is meant to show a mourner's relationship to the deceased and to disguise a person from the departed's spirit.
