Town With a Cool Green Heart

Climbing a plank ladder nailed up the side of a skinny tree and jumping into Black Creek "is kind of a rite of passage around here," says Den Latham (whose son leaps above). "The older you get, the higher you climb." When he's not managing Hartsville's community theater, competing internationally as a member of the U.S. East Surf Kayak Team, or writing about local environmental issues for Hartsville's Messenger newspaper, Latham lives near the creek, part of an 800-acre (300-hectare) nature preserve less than three miles (five kilometers) from the center of Hartsville.
