Growing Solo
Photograph by Phil Schermeister
A lonely pine tree rises between rocks near Olmsted Point, named after Frederick Law Olmsted and his son Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., who both played key roles in the history of Yosemite. Olmsted Sr. served as one of Yosemite's first commissioners, but is better known as the father of American landscape architecture; New York City's Central Park and the Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C., are both Olmsted designs.
