Town or Beverage?
Photograph by Bob Sacha
Reflected on the windshield of a car, the Downtown Hot Coffee sign stands like a beacon to coffee lovers and intrepid tourists. You might call it a bit of false advertising. Hot Coffee, Mississippiwithout a post office or a mayorisn't really a town and doesn't have coffee worth writing home about. In reality it's an unofficial community centered around a crossroads 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Jackson. The name Hot Coffee dates back to around 1870 when a local resident began selling coffee to travelers. Today the "downtown" is comprised of a few houses and two small general stores. Both sell brewed coffee, but during the broiling summer heat, cold sodas are the drink of choice.
