Martha's Kitchen
Photograph by Bob Sacha
Clean and spare, the old-fashioned dining hall on Bill and Edith Diehl's farm resembles a country chapel. As devoted Old Order German Baptistswho shun the use of electricitythe Diehls built the dining hall using only hand tools. They named it Martha's Kitchen after the family's youngest daughter, who serves as its hostess. Groups of tourists craving country cooking come to feast on Edith's homemade delicacies, including chicken, roast beef, corn bread salad, and sweet corn picked from the garden. On Sundays the dining hall becomes a place of worship where the Diehls host Old Order German Baptist services. These are small gatherings since, says Martha, "there are only twelve of us in the church."
