A Renaissance Woman
Photograph by Bob Sacha
Dressed according to Old Order German Baptist tradition, Martha Diehl sews a surprise wedding gift for a friend who works at the library. "The patches are designed to look like books in a bookcase," she says. Quilting is just one of her many talents. During the day she runs the bus depot in the nearby town of Mount Olive and fills in at the library. In the evenings and on Saturdays she works in the family garden, helps her sister with her basket-weaving business, and greets guests at her family's restaurant. When asked if she can identify with home project guru Martha Stewart, Diehl responds, "Since I don't watch television I don't really know much about her."
