Sifting the Past
Photograph by Manoocher
Perched on the edge of Qatna's acropolis, excavators search through dirt collected from the tomb's floor. Down the hill stand the mud-brick ruins of the 20th-century village of Mishrifeh. In the early 1980s the Syrian government resettled the village's inhabitants outside Qatna's ancient walls in order to protect the archaeological site.
