Fed Up With Gunfire
Photograph by Meredith Davenport
Women in Medellín, Colombia, protest the violence that has long plagued their nation as left-leaning guerrillas and right-wing paramilitary groups fought for political control, turning some neighborhoods into war zones. Money from the country's cocaine trade provides financing for gangs on all sides. Roots of this violence stretch back half a century. In 1948 the assassination of popular liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán triggered unrest and hostilities that have alternately simmered and boiled over ever since. Though there were nearly 2,200 homicides in 2003, there is reason for guarded hope in Medellín: The murder rate has been cut in half in the past decade.
