Emerging Health Worries
Photograph by Ken Balcomb

A female orca breaches in the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver. The red area on the whale just above the waterline is swollen genitalia. Ken Balcomb, an orca scientist who took this photo, believes the swelling was caused by a miscarriage. His concern is heightened because orcas have been accumulating high levels of toxins that may be affecting their reproductive systems. "In 27 years of photographing whales," he says, "I'd never seen this. On this day, two females I photographed showed it."
