Resident orcas swim and swirl in the calm waters of Pony Cove in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. These whales often travel close to shore in search of salmon, and enjoy rubbing their bodies on the bottom in shallow water. Such rubbing seems to be a cultural tradition, as certain groups engage in it while others do not. "These are highly social animals," says Craig Matkin, an Alaska-based orca scientist, "with complex social structures that extend on through the years indefinitely."
