Stolen Goods Photograph by Ira Block
A Japanese museum bought an Allosaurus skeleton—including this skull—from an American fossil trader for $400,000. The transaction, though, was illegal because the fossils were stolen from federal land in the United States. Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Land Management tracked down the felon, who paid a penalty of $50,000, but such fines have hardly put a dent in this black market. "The illegal trade in fossils is bigger and stronger than ever," says Larry Shackelford, a BLM investigator. "When someone with a good scam gets caught, the bad guys figure out another way."
