A Special Effect
Photograph by Lynn Johnson

Sixty-five million years ago, Tyrannosaurus rex was a fearsome predator. Today in the atrium of the Museum of Paleontology at the University of California, Berkeley, it's far more approachable. This 40-foot-long (12-meter-long) replica was assembled by a team that included sculptors from the visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic. "Museums are attracting more people from the film and special effects businesses—like me," says Roby Braun of Cycad Productions. "I want what I create to be on display for more than three minutes of film."
