Bumper Crop Photograph by Mark Leong
Stashed in the back room of a farmhouse in Inner Mongolia, fossils dug up from nearby fields will be sold to traders from Lingyuan, Chaoyang, or Jinzhou. The growing international demand for fossils has heated up a long-running debate between academic paleontologists and commercial fossil hunters: Many scientists insist that dealers destroy valuable information when they hack fossils out of the ground; dealers argue that many fossils would never be found if the work was left solely to the academics.
