In the gathering dusk of a winter's day, visitors crowd into the soaring colonnade hall of the Luxor temple. Amenhotep III—the father or grandfather of King Tut—began construction of the hall, but the project stalled during the reign of his heretic son, Akhenaten. King Tut finished the hall as Egypt returned to its traditional ways. Tut probably also commissioned the statues now at the northern end of the colonnade—including this one of the god Amun seated with his divine consort, Nut—but may have died before the stone even left the quarry.
