Ready for a Nap
Photograph by Anup and Manoj Shah

A well-fed hyena with a bulging belly yawns as cubs lick blood off her flanks. Hyenas are highly social, intelligent animals whose interactions are based on a strict hierarchy in which dominant individuals command deference from lower ranked ones. The societies are matriarchal as well, so that the lowest ranking female is superior to the most dominant male in the clan.
