Family Portrait Photograph by Anup and Manoj Shah
Despite their savage reputation, spotted hyena mothers are among the most caring in nature, nursing and protecting their cubs here in the Serengeti until they are 18 months old—nearly full grown. "They are tolerant, caring, and pretty affectionate," says Anup Shah, who tracked the species in Tanzania and Kenya. "That's a side of hyenas the public doesn't see very often."
