Siblings playing tug-of-war with a stick in the Serengeti aren't just playing, they're practicing being predators. "They spend a lot of time playing and wrestling in a similar way to the way they make kills," says Marion East, a hyena researcher at the Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin. There is a dark side to hyena cub life; a stronger sibling sometimes starves the other if food is extremely scarce and a mother's milk supply runs low.
