Silent Burdens Photograph by Tomasz Tomaszewski
A history of hardship is revealed in the lines of Stefan Loctu's face in the remote village of Vladnic. The Csángós have survived wars, oppression under communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, and discrimination despite Romania's fledgling democracy, but the weight of rural poverty still dominates their lives. While some Csángós believe EU membership will bring jobs and better living conditions, others aren't waiting. Many have fled abroad for jobs in Israel, Hungary, and Spain, where workers can earn up to ten times what they would back home.
