Romanian Gothic Photograph by Tomasz Tomaszewski
Atop a mountain of corn chaff, Csángós field hands earn a day's keep near the village of Somusca. For centuries Csángós have tended their farms and flocks in eastern Romania, isolated by mountains and their own culture—an ancient blend of European and Asian traditions. Today Csángó society faces many of the same threats as other ethnic minorities around the world: their sense of identity is fading; their youth are abandoning the old ways; and Romania is slated to joined the European Union in 2007, a move that could destroy Csángó traditions by hauling them into the modern world.
