On Pentecost Sunday, Csángós flock to Transylvania for prayers, communion (above), and a sense of belonging. Most Csángós are Catholics, a bond that connects scattered villages and distant kin in a nation that is predominantly Eastern Orthodox. Romania and Hungary have argued for generations over the ancestral origins of the Csángós, with both nations claiming them as their own. But for the Csángós, identity is often defined by faith, not borders on a map. Asked "What are you?" most would reply, "I am a Catholic."
