Pearls of the Vine Photograph by Tomasz Tomaszewski
In Vladnic, Dan Bákói gathers grapes the old-fashioned way—by hand. Later the harvest will be pressed into wine, one of Romania's main exports along with corn and wheat. Although the country brims with agricultural potential, years of neglect and mismanagement under communist rule have left Csángó farmers ill-equipped for the tough transition to modern farming. Cash from EU agricultural programs already flows into Romania, but the money doesn't always reach those who need it most. Instead it lines the pockets of corrupt officials.
