Gasping for Air Photograph by Jay Dickman
To relieve his asthma symptoms and breathe easy again, eleven-year-old De'Jon "DJ" Hemphill takes a quick hit from his inhaler during football practice in Redlands, California, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. Coping with some of the nation's worst air quality—which is aggravated by southern California's frequently hot, dry weather—local coaches rely on updates from the National Weather Service to help schedule practices. "If the air quality is going to be bad, we don't run," says Mark Jurado, president of Redlands Junior All American Football. "We watch the air quality very closely out here."
