Hasidic Upbring Photograph by Carolyn Drake
Skirted, but not restricted, Yael and Naomi Bruk don't let long hemlines dampen playtime. The twin three-year-olds are Lubavitchers, the best known of the Hasidim's movements—and the most common one followed by Orthodox Jews in Postville. Throughout their childhood and adolescence, Lubavitcher girls dress modestly, attend female-only schools, sit apart from males in synagogues, refrain from dating, and socialize only with girlfriends until they're ready to marry. Says Chaya Bruk, mother of Yael and Naomi, "You learn how to be a woman without all the guys around."
