Did You Know?Did You Know?

"Remember the day of Shabbat, to keep it holy. Pursue all your labor for six days, and do all your Melachah. But the seventh day is Shabbat…. On it you may do no Melachah."  On the Jewish Sabbath, or Shabbat—from  sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday—the Torah prohibits any melachah, which usually translates as "work." But the 39 categories of forbidden acts of melachah are so much more than the "work" we think of in the English definition.  They generally refer to any act that is creative or demonstrates control over one's environment, and includes transporting anything outside the house (carrying), flipping on a light (burning), or boiling water (cooking). It also includes less obvious acts like picking a flower (reaping), tearing toilet paper (tearing), or applying lipstick (dyeing). In refraining from the 39 acts of melachah, according to the Orthodox Union, "Our purpose in this is to express our belief and to testify that God is the Creator of the universe, and is the source, on an ongoing basis, of all creative forces within it." Visit this organization's website at www.ou.org/chagim/shabbat/overview.htm to learn more about the Jewish Sabbath.
