Modern Pioneer Photograph by Max Aguilera-Hellweg, M.D.
The giants in the stem-cell revolution include Graziella Pellegrini of the Eye Bank Foundation of Veneto, Italy, whose research with epithelial (skin) cells, specifically corneal stem cells, is helping the blind to see. Using recently discovered corneal stem cells, which occur in the limbus (the rim between the white and colored areas), she engineers new clear corneal tissue for patients with chemical or other burns that have clouded their vision.
