Winds on Mars Images by NASA/JPL
In mid-April the Spirit rover captured an unprecedented sequence of images of dust devils—micro-tornadoes that can move prodigious amounts of dust. Rover team member Mark Lemmon of Texas A&M University says atmospheric scientists hope such images will help them understand how wind shapes the surface of the red planet, calling Spirit's images "the best look we've ever gotten" at Martian whirlwinds in progress.
