Cave Art Mystery
AUGUST 2005
|
Natural High Photograph by Carsten Peter
Jufri, one of the local guides who led the French explorers to this prehistoric art, hauls himself up a 35-foot (8-meter) limestone column in Gua Ham (a cave named after Ham, another guide), carrying photographic equipment for Fage. Jufri and other guides scale cave walls freehand, partly because they're accustomed to the climbs. They visit the caves regularly to collect swiftlets' nests, which are sold for high prices to Chinese restaurants that serve bird's nest soup.
