Brazil's Wild Wet
AUGUST 2005
|
Seasonal Feast Photograph by Joel Sartore
With sharp eyes and bills, egrets converge on fish stranded in a shrinking pond. From about November to April, rains flood the Pantanal with a shallow sheet of water, and fish spread out across newly flooded lands. During the dry season the waters retreat, trapping aquatic life in pools and creating a feast for birds and other predators. With abundant food and diverse habitats, the Pantanal is home to more than 400 bird species.
