A meadow flooded with wet season overflow from the nearby Rio Negro becomes a submarine garden for a freshwater stingray. Ranchers fear stingrays more than they do the local piranhas: Stepping on the spine in a ray's tail can cause severe, long-lasting pain and a nasty infection.
