Tropical storms seem to set the globe in motion as they develop and travel in this three-dimensional animation. A well-defined Hurricane Frances is shown in the western Atlantic as Tropical Depression Ivan takes shape in the eastern Atlantic. Prompting the biggest evacuation in U.S. history, Frances—a storm the size of the state of Texas—forced nearly 2.5 million people to flee their homes. Making landfall on the east coast of Florida on September 4, 2004, Frances whipped Category Two winds across the Florida peninsula, killing at least four people and leaving billions of dollars in damage in its wake. Even more fierce, Hurricane Ivan roiled through the Caribbean and parts of the U.S., killing more than a hundred people.
