Living With the Bomb

Mini-Nuke Photograph from Bettmann/CORBIS
U.S. Army soldiers display one of the smallest nuclear weapons ever deployed—the Davy Crockett projectile. This tactical warhead, shot from a recoilless rifle, carried an explosive yield of up to one kiloton, the equivalent of a thousand tons of TNT. Although American troops fielded the Davy Crockett in Europe between 1961 and 1971 during the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the bomb was never used in combat. However, it did make an explosive cameo in the 1962 movie King Kong vs. Godzilla.
