Another day blows by at East Wind, a commune nestled in the Ozark Mountains in southern Missouri. Founded in 1973, East Wind bills itself as a nonviolent, egalitarian community whose 70-plus members share almost everything, including food, housing, clothing, and the half million dollars a year in profit generated by their primary business—making nut butters. It's a laid-back lifestyle that appeals to folks for a host of reasons, perhaps best summed up by one prospective member: "Mainstream U.S. culture is speeding backwards off a cliff."
