Cleaning up the commmunal kitchen is a job that East Winders classify as "hard to assign"—which means everyone must take a turn. Exactly how the work gets done, though, remains a very personal thing. It's all part of East Wind's ethos, which rejects many traditional notions about labor, wealth, marriage, and relations between the sexes. "An older guy here asked me if I wanted to have a three-month affair," says one of the commune's younger women. "You've got to respect a man who doesn't have a fear of commitment."
