Over Africa Photograph by George Steinmetz
The shadow of photographer George Steinmetz's plane glides along Kenya's section of Lake Natron, where microorganisms living on the water's salty crust create a palate of pink. Steinmetz's images help document biologist Mike Fay's mission: Flying low and slow over much of Africa, Fay shot 92,000 photographs and gathered data about the land's condition. This mosaic, Fay hopes, will help policymakers better understand the looming threats to Africa's rich and often vulnerable environments.
