Chad Oil Boon
SEPTEMBER 2005

At Your Service Photograph by Pascal Maitre
In Bébédjia, a town in southern Chad, a bar bears the name of the biggest investor in the country's new pipeline. "For people here oil is still something new and magic," says photographer Pascal Maitre. "They gave the bar this name because oil is like Father Christmas." Drawn by dreams of oil wealth, young men from outside the region have flooded into Bébédjia looking for jobs—and have pushed up the crime rate. Businesses like this bar have opened or expanded, yet the town still waits for paved roads, running water, and electricity.
