Forging Ahead Photograph by Gideon Mendel
With his grandmother by his side, seven-year-old Zamokuhle Mdingwe heads to a World AIDS Day ceremony wearing a T-shirt designed to lessen the stigma associated with HIV. Zamokuhle lost his mother to AIDS, but his own health has improved since he began taking ARV drugs this past year. "I talk to my friends about taking these pills, and they are happy to see me stronger," he says. "They know I have AIDS, and everybody is kind to me. I am just the same as anybody else."
