Their stories tell of fear of certain death replaced by hope for a long life. They are just a few among 26 million sub-Saharan Africans who have been stricken with HIV/AIDS. They are ordinary people with extraordinary courage. In poignant interviews collected by photographer Gideon Mendel, they—and those who care for them—describe the shock of learning about their illness, their optimism against overwhelming odds, and the void that remains when one is taken. Hear medical workers talk about the challenge of fighting to save so many lives in South Africa's rural Lusikisiki region, where people are poor and resources are few.
