Bundles of charcoal (above) and firewood still provide the heat that cooks most meals in Zambia. Wood fuels meet two-thirds of the nation's total energy needs. The charcoal industry provides work for some 50,000 people, according to Oscar Kalumiana of the Ministry of Energy and Water Development—but it also consumes large amounts of forest.
