After the Elephants Photograph by Lynn Johnson
This rubble-strewn ruin in Mfuwe was a house, until an elephant attracted to the scent of grain stored inside bashed in the roof. Thatching collapsed into the fireplace and burned. Zambians rarely react to such destruction with bitterness toward the animals, according to wilderness guide Rolf Shenton. "They've lived with these problems since time immemorial," he says. "But people have moved out of the national parks to make way for the animals, and they get fed up if the authorities don't help them with animal conflicts" elsewhere.
