Quality of Life
Photograph by Lynn Johnson

Aided by the North Luangwa Wildlife Conservation and Community Development Programme, villagers near North Luangwa National Park replace slow, laborious bucket toting with a network of hoses to transport water up the riverbanks. Only about a third of Zambia's rural households have access to safe water, and by improving conditions where poaching has been reduced or stopped, says coordinator Hammer Simwinga (above, at right), the program strengthens connections between human welfare and wildlife conservation.
