Growing Markets Photograph by Lynn Johnson
Farmers around Salamo bring their produce to the village market, where workers from Mutinondo Wilderness lodge (above, in background) come to buy supplies. According to lodge co-owner Lari Merrett, in the last three years purchases from area farmers have increased from less than 1,700 pounds (770 kilograms) of grains, vegetables, fruits, and honey to more than 18,000 pounds (8,200 kilograms). Buying locally "works well," Merrett says, encouraging conservation by pumping money from an ecotourism-based business directly into the village economy.
