A Boisterous Homecoming Photograph by Carsten Peter
Lasting well past midnight in the Ethiopian village of Asso Bollo, a party enlivened by dancing and rifle fire marks a local man's wedding. Following tradition, he married in his fiancée's village, then returned alone to his home where he stayed for several weeks. The couple later settled down in a house built by the groom's female relatives. Though the Afar are still known for their combativeness, the days when a man couldn't marry without first killing an enemy tribesman are gone.
